Close Reading Assignment for Ch. 17:
Chapter 17 (“The Pastor and His Parishioner”) brings a long-awaited meeting between Arthur Dimmesdale and Hester Prynne. It’s a very dramatic scene: confessions are made, secrets are revealed, blame is laid, and forgiveness is offered. Phew!
In a journal entry, consider the triangle that exists between Hester, Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth. Who has sinned against whom? Who is most guilty, and who is most innocent? Be specific!
(That is, you’ll be exploring (1) what Hester has done to Chillingworth and Arthur; (2) what Arthur has done to Hester and Chillingworth; and finally (3) what Chillingworth has done to Hester and Arthur. If there are other relationships worth considering, throw them in too.)
